4 fundamentals to make your small apartment look bigger
A small apartment can sometimes be difficult to furnish. It doesn’t take much to make them look very crowded. The “less is more” quote is especially true in the case of small spaces. The apartment in the picture is the perfect example of it. It’s exactly 40 square meters but looks much more spacious than that. The apartment was styled by Josefin Haag for Fantastic Franck. A true gem in term of interior design and the perfect home to any minimalist with a soft spot for design. Therefore we could ask ourselves what is it that makes it look bigger than it actually is and how could we apply it to our small apartments?
Of course there is a lot of chances than it doesn’t look as good as the apartment featured here. It was conceived by professionals interior designer but still, it can help you in the process.
1.Get rid of bulky furnitures
If you take a closer look, you’ll notice that the apartment’s furniture is almost all lightweight and airy. It plays a big part in the feeling of spaciousness that comes out of it. Big bulky furniture would visually make the room more stuffed hence looks smaller. Changing a heavy armchair for a still comfy but lighter chair could make the difference in your living room.
2.Clear the way
This seems logical but really it is so common to put a table or else in the way. The pathway needs to be free of any furniture or item that could block the passageway. On the pictures below you can see that each piece of furniture has been placed out of the natural passageway. This fundamental would, of course, depend on your apartment interior layout but try to avoid it as much as possible. It’s never a good thing to block the circulation flow.
3.Store your things
In a small apartment any item that just sits there purposeless becomes rapidly a source of clutter. Unfortunately, to live in a small space you need a little bit of discipline. Learning to put things back where they belong is essential. (Read about how to keep your space free of clutter here).
4.Use soft tones
The use of soft tones helps a lot with the overall atmosphere in an apartment. A light color scheme has the aptitude to impart a feeling of spaciousness and greatness. While a darker one will make it cozier and stress the feeling of intimacy.
