Your Next Jewelry Addiction: Vintage Bold Earrings

A while ago while browsing Instagram, I came across a real gem. Literally. A sparkly and new jewelry brand.
New Mermaid. This is exactly the kind of finds I wished to discover, when I created The Gem Picker. So I contacted the brand to gather more infos about them. I got a little interview and also some exclusive pictures just for you.

Their concept starts from the love of vintage baubles and the premise that nowadays it’s hard to find unique, quality jewelry at an affordable price. New Mermaid’s mission is to hunt for quality, statement-making and vintage jewelry. Their vision is that, and I quote “vintage baubles serve as little keepsakes and relics of history, and are so delicious and fun and guilt-free”.  I couldn’t agree more and I really love the way they put it. What’s also great about vintage jewelry is that they are one-of-a-kind. As unique as you are. Every piece is chosen and cleaned by New Mermaid, to be all shiny again.

Custom jewelry are not what they once were

As much as I appreciate the abundance in todays costum jewelry market. I have to admit that a lot of brands are doing pretty much the same thing. It’s kind of hard to find a product that truly stands out from the pack. The infinity sign, the turkish eye, the peace and love logo etc… might have been used a million times, at least. Plus, the quality of this kind of jewelry is not always on top. The colors faded rapidly and it’s often fragile. On the other hand, vintage jewelry were made at a time where craftsmanship was the driving force.

Old is the new black

The thing that I love the most about New Mermaid (apart from their jewelry) is that they found a way to make something old, new and exciting again. This goes along with the recycling trend of our times. It’s an important part since our way of consuming is starting to shift, more and more. We are becoming pickier about the things we purchase. We don’t buy things only because they are appealing to us but also because their story or their values resonates with us. And recycling the old stuff by making it new, resonates with a lot of people these days.

Innocent indulgence

Enough of the serious talk, New Mermaid is more about fun and audacity. According to it’s founder it’s okay to want to lay around in bed all day covered head to toe in sparkling jewels. That image pretty much sets the tone. Those jewels are lively full of colors and very bold. You could put on a pair of jeans, a withe T and a pair of their earrings and go in the chicest party ever without looking underdressed. Okay maybe I’m exaggerating a bit but you get what I mean. These jewelry are as powerful as the most original piece in your wardrobe. You don’t need much to look dashing. Yay. I’ve always preferred jewelry over clothing. So being able to put on some basics with a bold necklace and look like an it girl, gives me hope. A lot of hope.

I don’t know if you have noticed, you probably did. But since a little while, earrings are doing a big come back. Two years ago, it was all about necklaces but today the focus is definitely on earrings. All kind of earrings. Ear cuffs, studs earrings, bajoran Earrings etc… But Vintage earrings don’t have a lot in common with those except for the part where they ornament your ears. I have never really noticed it before new Mermaid’s explanation but “vintage earrings are quick-like-lipstick”.  You know those 80’s/90’s movie where the main actress come back home after a presumably long day at the office? What does she do first? She throws her high heels away while she unclips, her not-so-vintage-at-that-time earrings and all that, with only one hand. Putting them on or removing them is as easy as pie.
